Marine Fauna

Species in Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park

The marine fauna of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is one of its greatest treasures and therefore we should not forget the snorkeling equipment when visiting its beaches.
Each species lives in different habitats, so if we are close to the shore, the most normal thing will be to see obladas, salemas, mountain ranges, different types of bream, brotolas, momas, spits, gallants, triggerfish or the colorful Fadris.
As we go deeper into the sea we will see more and larger species such as groupers or sea eagles
Perhaps one of the most emblematic fish that we can distinguish on our coasts is the Moonfish (Mola mola), due to its large size (sometimes reaching 3 m) and its peculiar movements.
Cabo de Gata is also a transit point for various varieties of dolphins, whales and pilot whales.
The greatest concentration of fish will be found in the Posidonia meadows that are approximately one mile from the shore and at a certain depth, so we would need specific equipment to get there.
